Glossary: Absorption

Incorporation of the sorbed molecule into the host material: For example, absorption of the hydrogen proton in a metal such as palladium after dissociation of H₂ at the active surface, or absorption of a water molecule in a polymer. Absorption invariably causes swelling (dilation) of the host and can lead to embrittlement or rupture of rigid materials.
